SAI, Hockey India launch high performance centres

  • The Sports Authority of India (SAI) and Hockey India announced on February 6, 2020 that they will be setting up seven High Performance Centres across the country. The centres will provide state-of-the-art facilities to junior and sub-Junior hockey players.
  • The move is aimed at grooming young talent keeping in mind the 2024 and 2028 Olympic Games. Hockey India will be monitoring the centres. High Performance Directors will also be appointed.
  • The centres will be established under the Khelo India scheme. The centres will provide expert professional training, utilization of sports science and education of the youngsters. The programme will also aim to provide the athletes with international exposure.
  • While four centres including the National Hockey Academy at Dhyan Chand National Stadium in New Delhi, SAI Sundergarh in Odisha, SAI UDMCC in Bhopal and SAI Bengaluru will be active within the next three months, the remaining three centres will be developed over the next year.

Madhya Pradesh to deploy drones to map villages

  • The Madhya Pradesh state government has decided to deploy drones to map villages. This will be the first time that drone technology is used to make maps in the state.
  • Till now, all the land survey work in the satet was either done manually or with the help of satellite images.
  • The map of the population area will be created on a scale of 1: 500, which will help a clearer picture of the population area. Around 55000 villages have been selected for mapping.
  • The state’s revenue department signed an agreement with the Survey of India for the same on February 6, 2020.

  • Meerabai Chanu, former world champion, won the gold medal in 49 kg category of the National Weightlifting Championship. She lifted 203 kg in the national weightlifting championship.
  • She lifted 88 kg in her second attempt in snatch while she lifted 115 kg in clean and jerk as a total of 203 kg.
  • Meerabai has moved up to fourth place after China's Jiang Huihua (212 kg) and How Xihui (211 kg) and Korea's Ri Song Gum (209 kg) in the world rankings.

Cabinet approves Alliance Air to operate India-Sri Lanka flights

Supreme Court panel recommendations on prison reforms

  • The Justice Amitava Roy (retd.) Committee has submitted its report on recommendations to reform prisons. The committee was constituted by Supreme Court of India in 2018.
  • According to the report, India has 1341 functional prisons as on November 30, 2018. The report mentioned that total population of prisoners is 4.68 lakh while sanctioned strength is 3.83 lakh.
  • There are seven states in India – Delhi, Meghalaya, Uttar Pradesh, Uttrakhand, Chattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh and Sikkim have an occupancy rate of 150 percent.

India slips to 40th position in Intellectual Property Index

  • India slips to 40th position in International Intellectual Property (IP) Index. This information has been given in the report of the Global Innovation Policy Center of the American Chamber of Commerce.
  • This index measures the intellectual property environment of 53 economies of the world. Last year, India was ranked 36th.
  • The United States, Britain, Sweden, France and Germany are present on the first five positions. The report said that India has made good progress towards strong IP protection but the work is not yet complete.

L&T MBDA Missile System sets up integration facility in Tamil Nadu

  • L&T MBDA Missile Systems (LTMMSL) has recently established a missile integration facility in Coimbatore city in Tamil Nadu.
  • LTMMSL is a joint venture between Larsen & Toubro and the European defense company MBDA. The facility is spread over an area of 16,000 square meters.
  • It has been constructed in the Special Economic Zone where weapons will be manufactured for the domestic and global markets. L&T has a stake in the joint venture, while the remaining 49% is held by MBDA.

  • Daniel Arap Moi, longest-serving Kenyan President, passes away on February 04, 2020. He was 95. Current President Uhuru Kenyatta announced his death.
  • He ruled Kenya from 1978 to 2002 amid political repression, economic stagnation and corruption. He gained the support of Western countries due to anti-communist policies during the Cold War.
  • Moi won five consecutive elections. He was elected unopposed in 1979, 1983 and 1988, while multilateral elections were held in 1992 and 1997. In both of these elections, the opposition was divided and disorganized.

Sri Lanka ranks first in Breast Feeding support Policies

  • According to the survey, conducted by the World Breastfeeding Trends Initiative (WBTi), Sri Lanka has ranked first among 97 countries on breastfeeding supporting policies and programs.

India develops a vaccine to control classical swine fever

  • Uttar Pradesh-based ICAR-Indian Veterinary Research Institute (IVRI) has developed a new vaccine to control classical swine fever. This fever is believed as a highly contagious fatal pig disease.
  • According to the media reports, this vaccine will be cheaper than the earlier one. It may cost about Rs. 2 per dose while the existing vaccine costs Rs. 15-20 per dose.
  • India needs to control this disease because it is responsible for the annual loss of Rs. 4.29 billion. India requires about 20 million doses while only 1.20 million doses are available in the country.
