Income Tax Returns E-Filing

Paying income tax to the government is the responsibility of every individual. Tax payer’s money is utilized by the government on various development activities. Depending on the category there are multiple options to select for filing ITR. In this article, we will explain to you, how to Register in the Income Tax India website.

For E-filling one should have a browser and a working internet connection.

Step 1:

Open the browser and go to the website “https://www.incometaxindiaefiling.gov.in/home” to file ITR.  Incometaxindia launches.

 

Step 2: Click on ‘Register Yourself’ as you are a new user. Existing users can log in by clicking ‘Login Here’

Step 3: Select the ‘User Type’ for registration in the Registration Window.

Step 4: In the Registration Form –Individual, provide all the mandatory details and click on continue.

How to File ITR? – Steps to e-File ITR?

Below are the required documents before starting e-filling of ITR

Required Documents

  1. PAN
  2. Adhaar
  3. Investments details
  4. Bank account details
  5. Form 16

e-Filing of ITR

The Income Tax Return (ITR)  can be filed in two ways

  1. Offline
  2. Online

Let’s check the process in detail.

1. Offline Mode:

 Individual needs to download the applicable ITR, and fill the form offline.

After filling the form,  save the generated XML file and upload it.

Individuals must download any of the below utility to e-File the ITR with the upload XML method.

  • Excel Utility
  • Java Utility

Below are the steps to download the Java Utility or Excel Utility, and  to generate and Upload the XML:

  1. Open any web browser like Google Chrome, Internet Explorer and go to the Income Tax e-Filing portal www.incometaxindiaefiling.gov.in
  2. Download the required ITR utility under 'Downloads > IT Return Preparation Software'.
  3. Once downloaded, extract the utility ZIP file and Open the Utility
  4. System Requirements to run the utility.
    Excel Utilities: MS-Office Excel with Macro enabled version 2007/2010/2013 on Microsoft Windows 7 / 8 /10 with dot Net Framework (3.5 & above)
    Java Utilities: Mac OS 10.x, Microsoft Windows 7/8/10, and Linux with JRE Version 8 with the latest updates.
    Macros in Excel with Macros Go to > File > Options > Trust Centre > Trust Centre Settings > Macro Settings > Enable All Macro > Click ‘OK’ button twice to save these settings.
  5. Fill all the applicable and mandatory fields in the ITR form.
  6. Validate the tabs of the ITR form and do calculate the Tax.
  7. Generate the XML and Save XML.
  8. Login to e-Filing portal with a user ID (PAN), Password,
  9. Go to the 'e-File' menu and click on the 'Income Tax Return' link.
  10. On the Income Tax Return Page:
    • PAN card number will be auto-populated
    • Select the 'Assessment Year'
    • Select the 'ITR form Number'
    • Select the 'Filing Type' as 'Original/Revised Return'
    • Select the 'Submission Mode' as 'Upload XML'
  11. Choose any one of the following options to verify the Income Tax Return:
    • Digital Signature Certificate (DSC).
    • Aadhaar OTP.
    • EVC using Pre validated Bank Account Details.
    • EVC using Pre validated Demat Account Details.
    • Generate the EVC Option or Bank ATM. The validity of EVC is 72 hours from the generation time.
    • I would like to e-Verify later. Please remind me.
    • I don’t want to e-verify the ITR and I would wish to send signed ITR-V by normal or speed post to "Centralized Processing Center, Income Tax Department, Bengaluru – 560500"
  12. Click on 'Continue'
  13. Attach the generated ITR XML file.
    On choosing,
     
    • DSC as the verification option, Attach the signature file generated from a utility - DSC management.
    • Aadhaar OTP as the verification option, Enter the received Aadhaar OTP in the mobile number registered with UIDAI.
    • EVC through Bank account or Demat account or Bank ATM as the verification option, Enter the EVC received in the mobile number registered with corresponding Bank or Demat Account.
    • The other two verification options, the ITR submission is not complete until it is verified. The submitted ITR should be e-Verified by using the 'My Account > e-Verify Return' option or the signed ITR-V needs to be sent to CPC, Bengaluru.
  14. Submit the ITR.

2. Online Mode: Enter all the relevant data directly online at the e-filing portal and submit it. The taxpayer can file only ITR 1 and ITR 4 online.

  1. Open the browser and go to the Income Tax e-Filing portal, www.incometaxindiaefiling.gov.in
  2. Log in to the e-Filing portal with a user ID (PAN), Password.
  3. Go to the 'e-File' menu and click the 'Income Tax Return' link.
  4. On the Income Tax Return Page:
    • PAN will be auto-populated
    • Select  the 'Assessment Year'
    • Select the 'ITR Form Number'
    • Select the 'Filing Type' as 'Original/Revised Return'
    • Select the 'Submission Mode' - 'Prepare and Submit Online'
  5. Click on the 'Continue'
  6. Read all the given instructions carefully and fill the applicable and mandatory fields of the ITR Form.

Note :
Click on ‘Save Draft’  periodically to avoid loss of data/rework due session time out. This will save the entered ITR details as a draft. The saved draft can be accessed for 30 days from the date of saving or till the date of filing the return or till there is any change in the XML schema of the notified ITR

Choose the appropriate Verification option available in the 'Taxes Paid and Verification' tab.
Choose any one of the feasible following option to verify the Income Tax Return:

  • I would like to e-Verify
  • I would like to e-Verify later before 120 days from the date of filing.
  • I don't wish to e-Verify and I will send the signed ITR-V through normal or speed post to "Centralized Processing Center, Income Tax Department, Bengaluru - 560 500" within 120 days from date of filing.
  • Click on the 'Preview and Submit' button, Verify the data entered in the ITR.
  • 'Submit' ITR.
  • On Choosing 'I would like to e-Verify', e-Verification can be done through any one of the following methods by entering the EVC/OTP.
    • EVC generated through the bank ATM or the Generate EVC option under My Account
    • Aadhaar OTP
    • Pre validated Bank Account
    • Pre validated Demat Account

Note
On choosing any other two verification options, the ITR will only be submitted but the process is not complete until verified. The submitted ITR should be e-Verified later by using the 'My Account > e-Verify Return' option or the signed ITR-V should be sent to CPC, Bengaluru.

  • The EVC/OTP should be entered by 60 seconds else, the Income Tax Return (ITR) will be auto-submitted. Later the submitted ITR should be verified by using the 'My Account > e-Verify Return' option or by sending the signed ITR-V to CPC.
